On April 4th, the industry chain announced that Huawei and Xiaomi may launch MiniLED screen phones in the second half of the year, causing a surge in the stock prices of Taiwanese MiniLED driver IC manufacturers.
Industry chain sources said that Huawei has long intended to import mobile phones into MiniLED screens, but it has been postponed due to external factors. At present, we are continuously optimizing the yield of Mini LED modules to prepare for business opportunities in the second half of the year. Enterprises related to the Mini LED industry chain, such as Qianzhao Optoelectronics, Guoxing Optoelectronics, and Abbison, are also actively preparing.
Competing with OLED, Mini LED is about to emerge
Mini LED display (it is a backlight technology, which adds more LED beads to achieve more precise HDR zoning), mainly provided by the screen industry chain in Taiwan, China, China. Its advantages are similar to those of OLED screens. It also has power saving advantages. The most important thing is that it can effectively restore the brightness of colors, and its display effect and thickness are even better than OLED screens.
At present, Korean companies dominate the supply of small and medium-sized OLED screens in the industry, especially Samsung, which has almost a monopoly position and occupies 95% of the market share. Its production capacity and technology are in an absolute leading position. In this situation, mini LED, a product that competes with OLED screens, is about to emerge.
In terms of production capacity, mini LED is also not inferior, because the existing LED production line can start producing mini LED after adjustment, which is good news for mobile phone manufacturers. At least there is no need to worry too much about the production capacity of mini LED, and it can also reduce costs.
Apple looks at mini LED industry to prepare for getting rid of Samsung
More precisely, mini LED can be seen as a transitional product before the maturity of micro LED technology, and Apple is very optimistic about the prospects of this type of screen. The industry chain has previously pointed out that Apple intends to cooperate with Taiwanese manufacturers with the goal of developing micro LED products.
In addition to the screen technology itself, Apple is optimistic about micro LED and hopes to get rid of its dependence on Samsung's OLED screens. From iPhone X to iPhone XS series, Apple has used Samsung as the sole supplier for both generations of OLED screens, which is actually not in line with their supplier selection rules. Important components must be supplied by 2-3 manufacturers at the same time, but for OLED screens alone, they have no other choice.
